Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA)

Qualifying donors can make direct transfers to the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) from an IRA without incurring income tax. Current information regarding IRA contributions is available on the IRS website and from your IRA provider.

Where can I direct my IRA contribution?
Please direct your IRA contribution to the NMAI at the following address:

Smithsonian Institution
National Museum of the American Indian
PO Box 23473
Washington, DC 20026-3473
Tax ID Number: 53-0206027

As all Smithsonian Institution museums share the same tax ID, your gift will be processed faster if your IRA representative includes the following information with the distribution: NMAI, your name, address, and the purpose (i.e., donation, membership renewal, etc.).

Can I renew my membership using my IRA?
Yes, you can renew your membership using your IRA. To ensure your gift is processed as a membership, please ask your IRA representative to include the following information with your distribution: NMAI, your name, address, and member number (if known).

Consistent with IRS rules, the NMAI cannot provide membership benefits, including American Indian magazine, that have a value for tax purposes in return for IRA distributions. We encourage you to speak with your tax advisor regarding any questions you have about your IRA.
