Many bannerstones are made from banded slate, as seen here, a material figured with whirling, striped patterns. The practical utility of these objects was evidently balanced against the symbolic significance of their winged shapes and patterned surfaces. Ancient North Americans sought out banded slate for ornaments and implements for a period extending more than 5000 years.
