About Native Knowledge 360°
Native Knowledge 360° (NK360°) is the National Museum of the American Indian’s education initiative to develop vital new resources and teacher training for K–12 classrooms. NK360° helps educators build meaningful learning experiences that incorporate Native perspectives, more comprehensive histories, and accurate information that reflects the vibrancy of Native peoples and cultures today. We invite you to explore the resources and professional development offerings from Native Knowledge 360° to help transform teaching and learning about Native peoples of the Western Hemisphere.
Essential Understandings
The National Museum of the American Indian’s Native Knowledge 360° Essential Understandings about American Indians is an educational framework based on the ten themes of the National Council for the Social Studies standards. They serve as a foundation for our museum’s educational work and the materials developed by Native Knowledge 360°. Educators, curriculum developers, and administrators can also use these Essential Understandings to conceptualize new curricula, lessons, and learning activities. Available in English and Spanish.

Native Knowledge 360° continues to design new content to provide teachers and students of various grade levels a rich selection of geographically and culturally diverse resources. Created in collaboration with Native communities, scholars, and educators, NK360° resources bring the Native voice directly into the classroom. Mindful of today’s classroom demands and priorities, these materials are manageable in scope and address academic standards.

Native Knowledge 360° professional development supports educators by offering a variety of online and in-person opportunities designed to equip teachers with critical concepts and engaging ways to transform their teaching and learning about Native histories and cultures. NK360° professional development offers webinars, online courses, workshops, and teach-ins to help teachers feel more confident about integrating NK360° resources into their classrooms.

Native Knowledge 360° is aligned with the work of many Native nations, states, and organizations that share a common goal of improving teaching and learning about Native peoples. By supporting collective efforts and engaging in creative collaborations, the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) seeks to elevate the national dialogue and accelerate change on this important educational issue. NMAI’s objective is that these efforts will result in a better-educated American public—one with an increased understanding of the complexity, diversity, and relevancy of Native peoples.
