Larry McNeil (Tlingit/Nisga’a), b. 1955, Demented Coal Paradox, from The Home Planet, Global Climate Change series, 2013. Platinum print. Courtesy of the artist.

Even with advances in digital technology, the platinum process remains among the most stable of photographic processes. In his newest work, McNeil puts the platinum print’s indelibility to philosophical use. Here the figure is protected from industrial pollution by a gas mask woven from spruce root, an essential material in Tlingit basketry. In the face of environmental destruction, indigenous values and traditions both protect and persist.
