Showing Skin: Photography

The photographers featured in HIDE have constructed intimate and subtly provocative images of themselves and their communities. Using skin as a canvas, they emphasize their self-conscious awareness of American Indian stereotypes and representation and their desire to undermine historic photography in order to control the image. Uncovering the layers of individual identity and meaning in these works requires a bit of detective work for the viewer, and keeps control of the reading in the hands of the photographer.
