Collected by Dr. Washington Matthews (1843-1905, a US Army surgeon and ethnographer), probably between 1880 and 1894 when he was stationed at Fort Wingate, New Mexico; purchased by MAI from an unknown source in 1916 using funds donated by Thea (Mrs. George) Heye.
