Smithsonian Earth Optimism Summit Lecture by Dr. Douglas Herman
Description
On Earth Day, and as part of the Smithsonian Earth Optimism Summit, the museum’s senior geographer, Dr. Douglas Herman, presents an illustrated lecture titled "The Canoe, the Island and the World: Lessons in Leadership and Management from Old Hawai`i." There is ample evidence all around us that the management of human–environment relationships by the dominant society has brought huge imbalance. Doug’s presentation includes a discussion of the values of the voyaging canoe—represented by Hōkūle`a as it winds up its worldwide voyage of mālama honua (taking care of the Earth)—and lessons learned about how to live on a finite vessel, whether it is a canoe, an island, or island Earth. This lecture was recorded in the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian on April 22, 2017.
