- Discuss how using dialogic interpretation can help students engage in open-ended conversation with the goal of personal and collective learning. Participants will hear from Braden Paynter, Director of Methodology and Practice at the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (https://www.sitesofconscience.org/en/home/), Braden introduces the foundational theory and skills of dialogue, a methodological tool that can help navigate conversations around a variety of topics and issues. This session provides ways for teachers to navigate conflicts and challenges in dialogue and creates a roadmap for how to build deep conversation. The session includes both presentation and small-group work. Participants are strongly encouraged to watch Webinar Two in this series to see how dialogue is used in a virtual program with students. Webinar One originally aired on September 24, 2020. Webinar One is part of a four-part series designed for education professionals who teach about the Native nations of New York State. This series, called “Native New York in Your Classroom”, is tied to the Native New York exhibition (https://americanindian.si.edu/explore/exhibitions/item?id=981) at the National Museum of the American Indian in New York, NY. The series originally aired September 24 – October 15, 2020. The National Museum of the American Indian’s professional development programs introduce educators to Native Knowledge 360° (https://americanindian.si.edu/nk360), the museum’s national education initiative, and its extensive resources. Webinars are designed to support education professionals in learning approaches to incorporate more complete narratives about Native American histories, cultures, and contemporary lives into their teaching.
