- Native filmmaking has exposed the harsh history of colonial expansion and its dangerous environmental and cultural effects on Indigenous lands and resources. The panel will look at how Indigenous filmmakers are using film to tackle these crises and how it is used to protect and preserve these threatened lands and sacred sites. Ciara Lacy (Kanaka Maoli) Ciara Lacy is a Kanaka Maoli filmmaker, whose interest lies in crafting films that use strong characters and investigative journalism to challenge the creative and political status quo. Her work has shown at festivals around the world including Sundance and Berlinale as well as on Netflix, PBS, ABC, Al Jazeera, and the Criterion Collection. She was the inaugural Sundance Institute Merata Mita Fellow as well as part of the inaugural class of NATIVe Fellows at the European Film Market. Ciara holds a BA in Psychology from Yale University and has given talks at academic institutions across the U.S. She continues to work on documentary content for broadcast and digital while also expanding her intimate style of filmmaking into the branded content, commercial, and animation spaces. Colleen Thurston (Choctaw Nation) Colleen Thurston is an award-winning media producer and documentary filmmaker from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is an Assistant Professor of Journalism and teaches documentary studies and film production. She holds an MFA from Montana State University’s Science and Natural History Filmmaking program, where she also earned a graduate certificate in American Indian Studies. Her BA in Media Arts and Anthropology is from the University of Arizona. She produced and directed short documentaries for four seasons of the Cherokee Nation’s series, Osiyo, Voices of the Cherokee People, earning two Emmy awards for her work on the show. She is currently in production on her first feature documentary Drowned Land which explores water rights and the history of resource exploitation in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Cindy Benitez – Moderator Cindy Benitez is the program manager at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). She curates and runs NMAI's annual Native Cinema Showcase, hosts film and conversation series and curates international film showcases. A graduate from Barry University, Cindy holds a B.A. in Public Relations and an M.S. in Media Studies at CUNY Brooklyn College. Raised in New York and South Florida she continues to maintain ties to her family homeland of Paraguay.
