Living Earth Festival 2021 Symposium: Building an Agriculture Business in Indian Country
Description
A panel of Native leaders in the food and agriculture industry address one of today’s most crucial issues—creating innovative, robust, and ecologically sound food systems and agricultural businesses in Indigenous communities. From the melding of traditional agriculture and cutting-edge technology in renewable energy food production to the restoration of bison and launching of healthy foods to developing sustainable, best-quality seafood businesses, these experts reveal how creative development and wise stewardship of agriculture and natural resources are foundational to tribal sovereignty and success. Leonard Forsman is chairman of the Suquamish Tribe, a position he has held since 2005. As tribal chairman, Forsman serves as the leader of the federally recognized sovereign tribe and the government's seven-member tribal council. In 2017, he was elected president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, which represents 57 northwest tribal governments from Oregon, Idaho, Washington, southeast Alaska, Northern California, and western Montana. He recently completed his tenure as a member of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, to which he was appointed in 2013 by President Obama. Mark N. Fox is the chairman of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation (MHA). He is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and earned his law degree in 1993 from the University of North Dakota. First elected chairman in 2014, he is currently serving his second term. Chairman Fox serves on the federal advisory boards for the Department of Energy, Department of the Interior, and the Environmental Protection Agency. He previously served on advisory boards for the Internal Revenue Service and the National Indian Gaming Commission. He has also served on various national and tribal boards and has been the vice chairman of the United Tribes Technical Center and the United Tribes of North Dakota. He was recently elected chairman of the Coalition of Large Tribes. Dawn Sherman brings more than 25 years of business expertise and entrepreneurial skills to her role as CEO of Native American Natural Foods, home of Tanka bison products. A member of the Lakota, Shawnee, and Lenape tribes, she is keenly aware of the fundamental needs facing individuals at the community level on the reservation. Her South Dakota roots inform her decision making, and she is dedicated to seeking improvements in the food systems that benefit the health and wellness of her Indigenous community, as well as the community at large. Sherman believes teamwork and meaningful collaboration are essential to success and looks to the operational Niman Ranch partnership as key to continuing the Tanka vision. As part of the second generation of Native leadership and as a Native woman, Sherman’s unique vision combined with her deep experience in the food industry allows her the opportunity to give back to her own community and further her vision of food sovereignty for all. Carmen Davis (Makah/Chippewa Cree/Yakama) is founder and president of Davis Strategy Group, a consulting, business services, and media production firm. Davis has more than 23 years of service to Indian Country and, as an entrepreneur, she has successfully established, operated, managed, and grown several businesses in multiple sectors. She is equal parts strategic visionary and behind-the-scenes implementor, essential in guiding and overseeing every process of brand development, business expansion, nation-to-nation relationship building, and more. Davis is also the founder, publisher, and executive editor of Native Business, the only Native American owned-and-operated national print and digital tribal business publication, and the producer of the annual national Native Business Summit.
