Going Home 08: The First 25 Years - Jonathan Coddington
Description
The 1989 National Museum of the American Indian Act (NMAIA) opened a new era in relations between Native Americans and museums by giving legal weight to the spiritual and ethical concerns of tribes. To commemorate 25 years of repatriation, the National Museum of the American Indian has convened this symposium to discuss the history of the NMAIA, current repatriation practices at the Smithsonian Institution, and the future of repatriation beyond political and geographical boundaries. In this segment Johnathan Coddington, Associate Director for Science at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History speaks on the panel topic, "Smithsonian Repatriation Under NMAIA: The First 25 Years." Jonathan Coddington is currently Senior Scientist in Entomology and former chair of the departments of Entomology, Zoology, and Invertebrate Zoology at the National Museum of Natural History. He has a B.S. from Yale University, an M.A. and Ph. D. from Harvard University (1978, 1984), and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Coddington is Curator of the Arachnid & Myriapod collection (ca. 300 families and 375,000 specimens). His research centers on systematic and evolutionary biology, evolution of behavior, and adaptation of spiders, as well as the theory and statistics of biological inventories. He has led or participated in over 70 expeditions to more than 40 countries. The symposium, "Going Home: 25 Years of Repatriation Under the NMAI Act," was webcast and recorded at the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian on November 19, 2014
