LIving Earth Festival 2018 - Oneida Nation of Wisconsin
Description
The ninth annual Living Earth Festival focuses on sustainable development through heritage tourism, traditional agricultural practices, and the importance of Native foods and food sovereignty. In this presentation, Kyle Wisneski (Oneida), head of field crops and animal husbandry at the farm, and Jamie Betters (Oneida), manager of the Oneida Cannery, talk about their operations and how the mission of Tsyunhehkw^ (also spelled Tsyunhehkwa), the community agricultural program of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, goes beyond providing culturally important foods to the Oneida community and encouraging organic gardening among its citizens. Tsyunhehkw^—loosely translated as "life sustenance"—seeks to develop competence and self-reliance that will support the Oneida people in whatever they choose to do. This presentation was webcast and recorded in the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on July 22, 2018.
