Description
St. Labre Indian School serves the Northern Cheyenne and Crow communities in Montana. Middle school students visited the museum to give a program of traditional dances, drumming, and singing. Adults from the school include Tony Uceda, Major Gifts Officer; Nellie Speelman, Northern Cheyenne Community Representative; Tony Bearcomesout, Drum Teacher; and Glenda Littlebird, St. Labre employee. The student participants include 8th grader Jerika Birdinground, performing the traditional Crow dance; 5th grader Lillian Cooper, performing the Fancy Shaw Dance; 8th grader KʻGhan Bearcomesout performing the Jingle Dress Dance; 6th grader Joshua Walkslast performing the Menʻs Traditional Dance; 6 grader Wiley Bearcomesout, performing the Chicken Dance; 6th grader Payton Lone Bear, performing the Grass Dance; 6th grader Chitat Killsback, performing the Fancy Dance. Joshua, Wiley, Payton, and Chitat also sing in the drum circle along with 5th grader Frank Flying, Jr., 8th grader Ethan Frasier, and 6th grader Mac Cooper, Jr. The program concludes with the public joining in a Round Dance. The program was webcast live and recorded in the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on January 10, 2016.
