- The ninth annual Living Earth Festival focuses on sustainable development through heritage tourism, traditional agricultural practices, and the importance of Native foods and food sovereignty. The festival's first panel discussion is titled "American Indian MuseumPalm Trees, Food Deserts, and Herbal Teas: Food Sovereignty and Youth Empowerment | Living Earth." MA‘O Organic Farms in Wai‘anae, Oahu, trains young people to be culturally rooted and communally relevant social entrepreneurs. The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Tribe engages youth in identifying, harvesting, drying, and producing a variety of herbal teas for their community. In this panel discussion, the two organizations discuss innovative approaches to food sovereignty that also empower Native youth. Speakers include Joshua Fukumoto and Tori-Lyn Smith (Native Hawaiians) of MA‘O Organic Farms and Loretta F. Livingston (Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa Tribe), Coordinator of the Bad River Food Sovereignty Program. Camille Ferguson (Tlingit/Sitka), executive director of the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association, moderates the discussion. The panel discussion was webcast and recorded in the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on July 22, 2018.
