Formerly owned by Chief Knife Chief (Chani, Skidi Pawnee, ca. 1855-1903); inherited by Annie Knife Chief (Pawnee); collected from her by Indian art collector David T. Vernon (1900-1973) at an unknown date; acquired by MAI in 1968 through an exchange with the Jackson Hole Preserve, Inc. (a foundation backed by the Rockefeller family), which purchased Vernon's entire collection in 1965.
