Made and used by a male member of the Shantup family (Mohegan); inherited by Fidelia Fielding (Fidelia Ann Hoscott Smith Fielding, Mohegan, 1827-1908), possibly through her grandmother, Martha Shantup Uncas (Mohegan, 1761-1859), who was a sister of the artist; collected from Fidelia Fielding by anthropologist Frank G. Speck (1881-1950) between 1902 and 1904; purchased by George Heye from Frank Speck in 1906.
