Collection history unknown; said to have been presented to General José Rufino Echenique (1808-1879, President of Peru from 1852-1854) in 1853; inherited by his daughter, who sold it at an unknown date to Dr. Edward/Eduard Gaffron (1861-1931, a German physician and ophthalmologist who worked in Peru from the 1880s until about 1912 and amassed a huge collection of Peruvian antiquities); purchased by George Heye from Dr. Gaffron in 1912.
