Collection history unknown; said to have been owned by the Hunkpapa leader Sitting Bull (ca. 1831-1890) and Captain John Crawford ("Captain Jack" Crawford, 1847-1917), of the Black Hills Rangers, but this is unlikely; formerly in the collection of Elisha P. Slocum (1830-1911), an agent for the Adams Express Company in the Dakotas and probably acquired by him in the 1870s; inherited by Slocum's wife's niece, Edith Story Gray (Mohegan, 1874-1966); purchased by MAI from Mrs. Gray in 1962 using funds donated by John S. Williams (1901-1982, a New York City stockbroker and MAI trustee).
