Collection History
Owned and used by Ishi (Yahi, ca. 1860-1916) during his time at the University of California Museum of Anthropology in San Francisco (1911-1916); probably collected from him between 1912 and 1916 by Saxton Pope (1875-1926, a physician, professor at the University of California Medical School, and an avid bow hunter who studied with Ishi); acquired by Dr. Charles E. Grayson (1910-2009), an authority on traditional archery, at an unknown date; donated to MAI by Charles Grayson in 1962.
