Collected and annotated by Dr. Valentine T. McGillycuddy (1849-1939) while he was the Indian Agent on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation between 1879 and 1886; sent by Valentine McGillycuddy to General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) at the artist's request in 1884; inherited by General Sherman's son Philemon Tecumseh Sherman (1867-1941) and subsequently by General Sherman's granddaughter, Eleanor Sherman Fitch (1876-1959); donated to MAI by Eleanor Sherman Fitch in 1943.
