Collected in 1890 or 1891 by geologist Israel C. Russell (1851-1906) during a survey of the Mount St. Elias area (on the Alaska/Yukon border); donated to the US National Museum (later the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History) in 1892; acquired by George Heye through an exchange with the US National Museum in 1908.
