Formerly owned by Mohawk leader Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea, ca. 1742-1807); presented to his friend Dr. Caleb Benton (1758-1825), a physician in Catskill, New York, at an unknown date; passed down through the Benton family and inherited by Caleb Benton's great granddaughter, Mrs. Evalina Benton Collier (Mrs. Frederick J. Collier, 1879-1949); purchased from Mrs. Collier by MAI in 1934 using funds donated by Joseph Keppler, Jr. (1872-1956, a long-time friend of George Heye).
