Thought to represent the explorations of the crews of the Arctic exploring ships HMS Fury and HMS Hecla between 1820 and 1825; collected or excavated by anthropologist Junius Bird (1907-1982) in 1933 during the Norcross-Bartlett Expedition, led by Captain Robert A. Bartlett (1875-1946) and sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History, the American Geographical Society, and the US Department of the Navy; Junius Bird’s participation in the expedition was sponsored by MAI trustee Frederick Kingsbury Curtis (1863-1936).
