Collected or excavated in 1895 or 1896 by members of the Pepper-Hearst Florida Keys Expedition, led by anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing (1857-1900) and sponsored by Dr. William Pepper (1843-1898) and Phoebe Apperson Hearst (1842-1919) for the Free Museum of Science and Art; part of the collections of the Free Museum until 1908 when it was acquired by George Heye through an exchange with the Free Museum.
