Collected by Dr. Samuel Austin Davis (1857-1924, a surgeon who worked for the Guayaquil and Quito Railway Company in the early 1900s); purchased from Dr. Austin during the Second Ecuador Expedition, led by Marshall H. Saville (1867-1935, MAI staff member) and funded by George Gustav Heye and his mother, Marie Antoinette Lawrence Heye (1845-1915).
