Scope and Contents
This album contains 74 photographic prints taken by Frank Churchill in February-March 1905 among the Mescalero Apache in New Mexico. The album was later compiled and captioned by Clara Churchill. Some of the photographs were also later hand colored by Clara Churchill. These photographs include—views of tipis with and without families; Mr. and Mrs. Churchill among the tipis; groups of women and children; Indian agency buildings; women weaving baskets and carrying water; condemned school house; U.S. Indian School dormitory; and the saw mill. Most of the subjects in the photographs are unidentified except for Buena (Wa-no) Bonita and "Magoosh" (Indian Judge). Many of the photographs were taken on Issue (or Ration) day and feature groups waiting for or carrying rations. It is noted that many of the families photographed had a member of the family working at the saw mill. There are also a small amount of photographs, most likely added later to the album, from the Navajo reservation and the Laguna Pueblo in 1907, none of these have corresponding negatives in the collection. These include images of St. Michaels School, Canyon de Chelly and Hubbells Ranch.
