Scope and Contents
The photographs in Series 1: Oklahoma, Southern Tsitsistas/Suhtai (Cheyenne), were taken between 1906 and 1916 while Bedell worked on the Whirlwind mission in Blaine County, Oklahoma. There, she worked as a missionary-teacher among the Southern Tsitsistas/Suhtai (Cheyenne) alongside Deacon Oakerhater (Cheyenne). Bedell herself appears in many of the photographs, and it is unknown who the photographer is in those cases. A number are photographic postcards, some by Chaufty Studio. The photographs depict the Whirlind Mission school, which opened in 1897 and operated as a day school for Southern Tsitsistas/Suhtai (Cheyenne) children until 1917 under the auspices of the Protestant Episcopal Church. They also depict Southern Tsitsistas/Suhtai (Cheyenne) leaders and community members, posed in groups, and going about their daily lives.
