Biographical / Historical
Clinton Rickard (1882–1971) was a Tuscarora chief known for founding the Indian Defense League of America (IDLA), and for promoting Native American sovereignty. He worked for free passage of Native Americans across the US–Canada border, and to prevent the flooding of the Tuscarora Reservation.

This collection includes three black and white silver gelatin photographic prints (P14081-P148083) featuring Tuscarora Chief Clinton Rickard. P14081 is from July 1928 and is a view of the Indian Defense League of America delegation crossing International (or Honeymoon or Falls View) Bridge at Niagara Falls, at the first annual celebration of border crossing privileges to all Indians. P14082 displays a delegation to Governor Roosevelt in Albany, New York, circa 1929. P140183 is a view of Chief Clinton Rickard showing off a wampum belt. Likely made around the same time, circa 1929.
