I'm a member of the Tohono O'odham Nation from Arizona. It's been a busy two weeks here. I've seen a lot of baskets in the NMAI collection, and met a lot of people.

I usually don't have that much time to do my own work, but I do some commission pieces. The slides that you'll see are of baskets I've made. I used to do a lot of shows, but now that I've started the Tohono O'odham Community Action (TOCA) project I limit the shows I do."")
dataJT[2] = new data("images/collaboration/jt02_l.jpg",""TOCA is a non-profit grassroots project. We are funded by private grants and private donations. The four main programs of TOCA are the Tohono O'odham Community Food System, the Tohono O'odham Arts and Culture Program, the Tohono O'dham Basketweavers Organization (TOBA), and the Eshabig Youth Initiative.

My tribe is well known for it's weaving. The weaving that's currently being done is for tourists. There are very few weavers that make baskets for collectors. TOBA is a group of weavers who got together and started talking about issues that affect weavers. The problem for most weavers is traders coming onto the reservation and taking advantage of the weavers who live in isolated villages. Those who don't have transportation can't afford to go off the reservation to sell their baskets. The money that we make from the sale of baskets is used to purchase more baskets. We also pay weavers to teach in their communities."")
dataJT[3] = new data("images/collaboration/jt03_l.jpg",""Traditionally women are supposed to do the weaving, but now the people don't care who is weaving as long as the tradition is kept alive and passed on. I learned to weave in school on the reservation. My great grandmother wove, but it stopped when she passed on and no one in my family picked it up until I began learning to weave."")
dataJT[4] = new data("images/collaboration/jt04_l.jpg",""I had three teachers in the beginning. I started making owl dolls. A weaver named Clara Javier saw some of my dolls and was impressed with them. She actually came looking for me to make one for her. It was an honor for me to make her a doll. After that, I'd go over to her house a lot. She taught me the old techniques and designs, and she told me about her life as a weaver."")
dataJT[5] = new data("images/collaboration/jt05_l.jpg",""Clara had gone blind. When she'd pick up a basket she would touch the whole shape of it like she could see the stitches of the basket with her hands. She didn't speak English and I didn't speak my language, so every time I saw her I would have to bring along an interpreter. I was very fortunate to spend time with her before she passed on."")
dataJT[6] = new data("images/collaboration/jt06_l.jpg",""This is an 8 inch miniature basket. It's called The Hatching. The black widow spiders on it are inspired by the spiders in my area. When spiders hatch, they all come out at once and go in different directions. This is a contemporary design using traditional technique."")
dataJT[7] = new data("images/collaboration/jt07_l.jpg",""This basket is made of four different types of materials. Yucca is the main material which is used for the white background. The spiders were made from a black material known as devil's claw. On the center of the spider, on his belly, is the cross made from a specific yucca root. This plant produces desert bananas so we call this material banana yucca root. The foundation of the coils of the basket is bear grass, but you can't see it because this is a closed stitch basket."")

dataJT[10] = new data("images/collaboration/jt10_l.jpg",""This is a contemporary piece called Ripples. It incorporates a gourd which is the base and bear grass which forms the ripples. This basket was inspired by ripples in water and is an open stitch basket using a split stitch technique."")
dataJT[11] = new data("images/collaboration/jt11_l.jpg",""This is a traditional pattern called Man in the Maze. A very popular design- it's also the symbol for the Tohono O'odham Nation."")
dataJT[12] = new data("images/collaboration/jt12_l.jpg",""The Man in the Maze represents the meaning of life. There is a story behind this: you start from the center and go out chasing the light part. The turns you make in the maze represent the turning points in your life. Once you've gotten through the whole maze you've finished your life and go on to the next life."")
dataJT[13] = new data("images/collaboration/jt13_l.jpg",""The people dancing around the Man in the Maze are doing the traditional Round Dance which is very sacred to my people. They are dancing around the Creator and dancing around life. This is an 8 inch miniature basket"")
dataJT[14] = new data("images/collaboration/jt14_l.jpg",""This is called Clear Cut. It's a unique basket incorporating birch bark that was shipped to me from Alaska, aged bear grass, and sinew for the stitching."")
dataJT[15] = new data("images/collaboration/jt15_l.jpg",""When I was learning to weave, my teachers all told me that to weave you really need a clear mind and you've got to be in a good mood, because if you don't have a clear mind and you're upset your work will show it. If you have a good heart and good thinking your work will come out really nice."")
dataJT[16] = new data("images/collaboration/jt16_l.jpg",""They would also say to listen to your work, listen to the materials, and listen to the basket. I never really understood what all this meant until one day, while I was working on this basket it fell down. It landed upside down and I saw what it was telling me - it wanted to be done the other way around. The birch bark was actually supposed to be on the top, but it told me that it didn't want to be on the top, so I finished it off like that on the bottom. That's why this piece has an open stitch on the bottom, because it was intended to be the top."")
dataJT[17] = new data("images/collaboration/jt17_l.jpg",""The bark represents the outside of the tree and the top, the bear grass weaving, represents tree rings. When you cut a tree you see the rings in it which determine the age of the tree. That's why this basket is called Clear Cut."")
