It's a remote area where I was raised by my grandparents since I was very small. Most of my education is from the area as a grass roots traditional Navajo. To this day I still go by the guideline that was given to me by my grandparents. So I came down here as an artist-in-resident."")
dataGJ[2] = new data("images/collaboration/gj02_l.jpg",""One of my goals was to see the sacred objects that they have collected, so of course, I had to get permission from the Navajo Nation in order to see them. It was a very special experience for me to be with them (the sacred objects), to talk to them, and to give them corn pollen. It felt good to handle them. That was a very special time for me."")

dataGJ[4] = new data("images/collaboration/gj04_l.jpg",""It was very emotional for me during my week's residency; a real culture shock. I stayed at a hotel called the Leo's House, run by the Catholics. At night it would remind me of when I was small. Then I'd go back to the museum during the day, which was heavenly. It was a very special feeling being around the objects."")
dataGJ[5] = new data("images/collaboration/gj05_l.jpg",""It was research, but it was really more a matter of being around the objects created by my forefathers, my foremothers, and my grandparents before me. They had created them more for a purpose than for art.

When I looked at all of these objects it was more about what they did, than looking at them as art objects. It gave me more energy. It gave me more as a painter, to have a purpose as an artist; more of what I can share during my painting. That's what I do and what I incorporate and interpret into my work. All from the knowledge and wisdom that was given to me, and from what I experienced when I was small"")
dataGJ[6] = new data("images/collaboration/gj06_l.jpg","“To be at the museum gave me refreshment of mind of what it all really meant to me. So when I went back home, my work became deeper. More depth, and more of a purpose; preserving for future generations. So they may look at it and relate to it. This is something I try to look into when I paint.

I continue to be involved with the museum so I can become more knowledgable about the Navajos and myself; a life time of learning. This is what I see in my work; it's going to get stronger. It's going to get more powerful in such a way where I feel more confident in myself."")

I began working on the project by talking with representatives of the Navajo Nation Museum, the Dilkon Chapter House, and Tse Zhin Tah youth group. The Dilkon community made a commitment to work on the art installation piece which would represent them to the rest of the Navajo Nation."")

The response was very good and the participants gathered together to paint their images on panels."")

They displayed an expression of themselves, via their art, to the rest of the Navajo Nation. It makes a big difference as a painter because, some of us artists have real deep feelings about things like this instead of just doing art work just to market to sell."")
