I am Kiowa from Anadarko, Oklahoma. Anadarko is the Indian capital of the world. I was born in Lawton, Oklahoma and grew up in the country between Carneige and Mountain View, Oklahoma. My family moved to Wichita, Kansas where I went to grade school. High School years were at Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas. Those were wonderful years! I received a B.A. in speech pathology from USAO in Chickasha, Oklahoma. I received my Masters from CSU in Edmond, Oklahoma.

I moved back to Anadarko 25 years ago where my grandmother, Hettie Takone, lived. She has been my teacher and mentor in learning to beadwork and make Kiowa clothing. My designs are inspired by my grandmother’s work. I don’t make what people call traditional Kiowa clothing, I can only say that the clothing I produce are made by a Kiowa.

I’ve only been seriously making Kiowa clothing for the past 10 years. I decided to learn to make Kiowa clothing after not being satisfied with the results of what others were making for my daughters regalia. The first item of clothing I made for my daughter, Danieala, were a pair of leggings. After that my daughter joined me in learning to make clothing. For years I had heard about internships and research programs at the Smithsonian but could never find out any information on how to apply. Last year at the Red Earth Celebration in Oklahoma City, I happened to meet Donna Shakespeare (NMAI Fellow in 2000) and she gave me all the information, God Bless Her."")

I studied the many dresses worn by women at powwows and researched buckskin dresses in many books. This was the beginning of my research in the construction of Kiowa regalia and my desire to research further.

I choose a cream colored hide and my daughter chose the background color for the beadwork which was turquoise-green. I prefer to use cut beads for my work. I was extremely surprised and happy with the results.

All my buckskin dresses are two pieces. The skirt has a cotton top. The buckskin top fits over the skirt so the cotton piece is hidden. No machines are used to put the dress together they are all hand sewn."")
